Sir Dallas Gerald Mercer Bernard was employed by Jardine, Matheson & Co. Ltd in China and Hong Kong, 1911-1928, working mainly in the Private Office, before joining Matheson & Co. Ltd. He was a Director of Jardine, Matheson & Co. Ltd, 1919-1928, and Chairman of Matheson & Co. Ltd, 1928-1942. Bernard was Deputy Governor of the Bank of England, 1949-1954.
