Scope and Contents

Correspondence of offices of Jardine, Matheson & Co. Ltd and Matheson & Co. Ltd regarding Jardine, Matheson & Co.'s property, with enclosed letters and papers, including some copies of semi-official correspondence. The composition of many of the series changed over time, meaning that one sequence of correspondence might be spread over several different series in J2. There is also some duplication of letters, caused mainly by Jardine Matheson, Hong Kong, and Matheson & Co. Ltd, London, keeping their own copies of the same correspondence series. J2/1-7 are comprised of series of the firm's early correspondence, dating from 1921 to 1941, which were accessioned before 2010.

J2/8-51 are comprised of accessions received between 2010 and 2015, and contain different sets of correspondence belonging to Jardine, Matheson & Co. Ltd and Matheson & Co. Ltd:

J2/8 contains correspondence from before 1945.

J2/9-22 are files of correspondence belonging to Matheson & Co. Ltd designated 'Ports Correspondence', containing correspondence of Hong Kong and Shanghai with the firm's outports, 1928-1941.

J2/23-26 are files of wartime correspondence belonging to Matheson & Co. Ltd.

J2/27-41 are volumes of post-war correspondence belonging to Jardine Matheson, Hong Kong.
