Scope and Contents

Original property letters from Jardine Matheson, Kobe and Yokohama, to Jardine Matheson, Hong Kong, and copies of a few property letters from Hong Kong to Yokohama, with enclosed letters and papers:

1. Nos P.1-30 from R.G. Bell and A.E. Smith, Kobe, to D.G.M. Bernard, Hong Kong, 20 August 1926-16 December 1927.

2. Nos P.1 from A.E. Smith, Kobe, to D.G.M. Bernard, Hong Kong, 19 January 1928, and P.2-30 from R.G. Bell and A.E. Smith, Yokohama, to B.D.F. Beith, D.G.M. Bernard and J.J. Paterson, Hong Kong, 1 February 1928-9 December 1932.

3. Nos P.53-58 from J.J. Paterson, Hong Kong, to R.G. Bell, Yokohama, 6 February 1931-5 January 1933.

The enclosures include documents regarding the development of Yokohama, including estimates for reconstruction schemes and a formal acceptance by Jardine, Matheson & Co. Ltd of the official plan for the improvement of a portion of Yamashita-cho, Yokohama, enclosed with letter no. P.11 from Kobe to Hong Kong, 4 March 1927.

There are also some related letters, including private and other correspondence between Jardine Matheson, Hong Kong and Yokohama, and three pieces of correspondence between Jardine Matheson, Hong Kong, and Canadian Pacific Steamships Ltd, Hong Kong, 8 April-12 May 1930, regarding a joint lane between Lots Nos 21 and 22, Yokohama.
