Scope and Contents

Memoirs of former employees of Jardine, Matheson & Co. and research papers regarding the firm's history and related subjects, including much correspondence. The papers include notes produced by James Steuart during the 1930s in preparing 'Jardine, Matheson & Co. afterwards Jardine, Matheson & Co. Limited. An outline of the history of a China House for a hundred years 1832-1932', which was edited by Steuart, and printed privately in Hong Kong in 1934 (see L12/3).

Access to the collection is subject to special conditions and is at the discretion of Matheson & Co. Ltd, part of the Jardine Matheson Group. A statement of the conditions and an application form are available in the Manuscripts Reading Room. Printed copies of the form are available by post (please contact the University Library). Records described in the catalogue as being in a bad condition are in a fragile state that precludes them being made available to readers.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

L11/1-19 and L11/25 were part of the initial accessions to the Archive. L11/20-24 and L11/26-29 were received in two accessions from Matheson & Co. Ltd, London, 2013 and 2016. L11/30-31 were found among non-archival material relating to the Archive and transferred to this series. L11/32-53 were received as part of accessions from Matheson & Co. Ltd in 2018.
