Robert Gowland Bell joined Jardine, Matheson & Co. Ltd in 1908, aged 21. He was employed in Japan, 1908-1934, initially in the Shipping and Import Departments, then as Agent at Tokyo and Yokohama and Acting Agent at Kobe.
