Letter from WSC (Peshawar, 4th Hussars, India) to "Jack" [John S Churchill] in which he comments on his appointment as orderly officer to Sir William Lockhart; discusses his duties; comments on a recent "skirmish"; describes Peshawar and its climate; recommends that Jack should write down his impressions of India; comments on a virulent plague of which 400 people a day in Bombay have been dying; and describes Colonel [John] Broadbent as a "stupid old man - but amiable". Letter from WSC (Bangalore [India]) to "Mamma" [Lady Randolph Churchill] in which he discusses the legal action to be taken over a fraud [perpetrated on them by James Cruickshank], comments on [Henry Dupre] Labouchere and [James] Welldon's opinions [about a scandal in the 4th Hussars in which WSC was implicated], describes his daily routine at Bangalore and says that he is looking forward to a shooting expedition with Hugo [Baring].

Letter from WSC ("In the train", Sioni [India]) to "Mamma" [Lady Randolph Churchill] in which he says that he and Hugo [Baring] met [Winifred and Victoria] Kennard, Arnold Morley, Sir Francis McLean, Baker Russell; reports that he received her messages from [Lord] Fincastle; comments on the unpopularity of [Victor, 9th Lord] Elgin as Viceroy of India; apologises for his writing and says that he hopes to be able to go to Egypt [to serve under Sir Herbert Kitchener]. Letter from WSC (Bangalore [India]) to "Mamma" [Lady Randolph Churchill] in which he outlines his plans for returning to England and describes his eagerness to return to civilisation after "barbarous squalor". He comments on the waste of his time in India apart from that spent reading, the amusement provided by discussions between [Ronald] Kincaid[-Smith] and [Charles] Agnew and his distaste for Anglo-Indian society. Letter from WSC (In the train near Umballa, North West Provinces [India]) to "Jack" [John S Churchill] discussing his position as war correspondent with the Malakand Field Force and the likelihood that he will see active service and will be awarded a medal. He also gives his opinions on the violation of the "Pax Britannica" and the necessity for the British government to take revenge on the frontier tribes.

Letter from Sir Bindon Blood (Camp Inayat Kila [West Pakistan, now Pakistan]) to [Colonel John] Brabazon in which he expresses his admiration for WSC's conduct in fighting, says that he may get the chance to earn the Victoria Cross or the [Companion of] Distinguished Service Order and describes the progress of the frontier war and enemy tactics.

Letter from Lord Randolph Churchill (Government House, Bombay [India]) to [Lady Randolph Churchill] including: birthday greetings; comments on the "adventures" had by WSC; arguments between Leonie [Leslie, earlier Leonie Jerome] and the Leslie family; his opinion of Parsee practices; descriptions of his social engagements and those he has met, who included leading native politicians; his itinerary and a request that she should tell "Winnie" [WSC] that he has received his letter.

Letter from Lord Randolph Churchill (Residency Lucknow [India]) to [Lady Randolph Churchill] including: thanks for her letters and a request that she thank "little Winny" [WSC] for his letter which Lord Randolph describes as well written; his annoyance at a letter from [Sir Henry Drummond] Wolff; his poor opinion of the English in Lucknow; and observations on a meeting with the natives of Lucknow.

Letter from WSC (Meerut [India]) to "Mamma" [Lady Randolph Churchill] in which he says that he did not write articles in the Pioneer, but criticises the Indian bureaucracy for "jobbery" and the mismanagement of the Tirah campaign. He discusses ["The Story of the Malakand Field Force"], says that he has been disappointed on re-reading the manuscript and reports that his team was defeated in the polo tournament.

Letter from WSC (Peshawar [India]) to "Mamma" [Lady Randolph Churchill] in which he discusses financial affairs, expresses relief that "Jack" [John S Churchill] will be jointly liable for a loan which she is taking, asks her to reply to his letters, and makes observations on relations with the tribes which make it likely that there will be no fighting.
