Biography
James Johnstone Keswick assumed responsibility for Jardine, Matheson & Co.'s business in Japan in 1875. He was a Partner in the firm, 1876-1902, and Taipan (Chairman), 1889-1895.

Most of the letters are addressed to William Keswick, Hong Kong, but there are also letters to Kojima Riotaro, agent for Goto Shojiro, Nagasaki, and to C.F. Hooper, Nagasaki. Only pages 1-32 of the volume have been used.
