Sierra Leone, 1905 - 1953
Postcards showing views in Sierra Leone, particularly in Free Town. The majority are by the Lisk-Carew Brothers, number 14 is by the Sierra Leone Government, Raphael Tuck and Sons Ltd, and number 15 is by Ceylon Pictorials. Numbers 20 and 30 give no indication as to the photographer.
Sierra Leone, 1950 - 1970
The prints listed were chiefly from the files of the Photo Bureau, the majority being mounted on sheets of paper with substantial descriptions, and in many cases the negative attached. Titles and captions, including the names of institutions, have been recorded as found. Captions supplied by the cataloguer are enclosed in square brackets.
Sierra Leone 1938: a geographer's journey
A description of Robert Steel's five months in Sierra Leone based on his notes, diaries and letters to his fiancée, 93 pages. The work was begun by Steel in the time leading up to his death, and completed and edited by his son-in-law, Colin Johnson. There is an accompanying letter from Eileen Steel to the R.C.S. Librarian, 8 January 2000.

Sierra Leone Diary, 1938-06-01 - 1938-12-19
Copy of a diary kept by Lanning while employed by Gold & Base Metal Mines of Nigeria Limited recording his work as a prospector and surveyor. Subjects include pay, accommodation, colleagues, road and camp organisation, drilling, dredging, soil samples, gold production, the supervision of labour, and mining prospects. Lanning also describes his social life and travel. The diary is accompanied by notes on the history of Sierra Leone and its African peoples (50 sheets).

On the right appears the imposing Centenary House, built after the Sierra Leone centenary celebrations, 1887, and on the left the premises of Messrs Pickering and Berthoud. Pickering and Berthoud were on the site from 1883 but Dr. Christopher Fyfe does not know when the building shown here was built.
