113 x 159 mm. Showing a line of bearers carrying produce (probably palm kernels) along a jungle track in the Sherbro hinterland. The hampers are long cylindrical baskets made of palm leaves attached to a wooden framework. Transport difficulties were one of the main impediments to opening up the country for trade before construction work started on the railway in the mid 1890's: Alldridge estimated that it took 30 men to transport a ton of palm kernels in the manner seen here.
