Scope and Contents
Sepia postcards published by W.J. Johnston and Sons, Freetown. They were printed in Treves (Trier) - many cards in this period were printed in Germany. The collection has been studied by Dr. Christopher Fyfe and the postcard descriptions are based on his notes.

Dr. Christopher Fyfe, University of Edinburgh, comments that advertisements for W.S. Johnston appeared in the Sierra Leone press in 1893-94, but he has no record of their later activities.

Immediate Source of Acquisition
The postcards were donated in 1990 by the family of the late Edward George Coomber, who purchased them in Sierra Leone in 1944-46.

DateText: At least one of the postcards was taken before 1897. The others are post-1900 but all were printed before 1921 when the foreign postal rate went up from 1d (as shown on the back of these cards) to 1 and 1/2d..
