Melbourne Public Library, 1885 - 1901

200 x 147 mm. An interior view looking along a reading room lined with columns and busts, and with the bookshelves in alcoves. The library, situated in Swanston Street, was designed by Joseph Reed. The foundation stone was laid in 1853, and the first portion of the building was completed in 1856, when it was officially opened in that year.

Melbourne University, 1885 - 1891

207 x 149 mm. A view looking across a small ornamental lake towards two of the university buildings, the original building being on the right. One of the oldest Melbourne buildings, it was completed in the 1850s, with external walls of Victorian Bluestone, and faced with Hobart freestone.

Menzies Hotel, 1870 - 1880

183 x 128 mm. A view of the hotel, which stands at the junction between William Street and Bourke Street. The hotel, opened in 1867, is built in the renaissance style, and was erected by David Mitchell, father of Dame Nellie Melba. For a later view of the building, considerably altered, see Y3087D/18.

Menzies Hotel, Melbourne, 1885 - 1901

200 x 149 mm. A view of the hotel which stands on the junction between William Street and Bourke Street, with a tower, in renaissance style, at one corner. The different claims are identified in the key, with Lazarus’ crushing plant at the left. Quartz-crushing machines were used in Bendigo before anywhere else in Victoria, and on the New Chum Reef since 1855 (see Y3087C/5).
