The foundation stone was laid in 1853, and the first portion of the building was completed in 1856, when it was officially opened in that year.

207 x 149 mm. A view looking across a small ornamental lake towards two of the university buildings, the original building being on the right. One of the oldest Melbourne buildings, it was completed in the 1850s, with external walls of Victorian Bluestone, and faced with Hobart freestone.
