Natives spearing fish from a dug-out, 1888 - 1889

 Item
Reference Code: GBR/0115/RCS/Y308A/90

Scope and Contents

210 x 158 mm. A study of Aboriginal Australian fishermen, showing three men in a small dug-out canoe, one of whom holds a spear while others stand or sit on a tree trunk which juts into the river. Photograph by Charles Bayliss (stamped in relief on corner of print). The positive identification of this print as Bayliss' leads to the supposition that the previous Aboriginal Australian photographs are by him. They too display the same compositional exactitude and a striving to include as much information as possible in the print. By the same criteria many of the landscape photographs could also be Bayliss' work. All the prints taken in Sydney (Y308A: 98-117) with the exception of two (which are of inferior quality, and probably amateur work) are positively identified on the prints as Bayliss' work, and it is not unlikely that most of the prints from south-east Australia were bought in Sydney from Bayliss' shop in George Street. This would certainly not conflict with Bayliss' known photographic activities; as well as making the famous panorama of Sydney for Bernard Holtermann, he made several expeditions all over New South Wales and Victoria photographing landscape, towns and Aboriginal Australian life.
