A view from a hill near Rourkes’ Bridge on the Healesville Road looking across the River Yarra, past a recently made clearing on the far side and towards a newly constructed Government road: Corranderrk is the local habitation of the Natives of this district, and is situated on the right hand side of the picture, about a mile and a half from the roadway.

Spring Street, Proclamation Day, 1900 - 1901

201 x 144 mm. A view of Spring Street from the Parliament Buildings, looking across towards the Grand Hotel. A figure under an awning (presumably the Governor) reads the Proclamation, with crowds all around, and soldiers at attention lining the streets. Queen Victoria signed the Federation Proclamation on 17 Sept. 1900 and it came into effect on 1 Jan. 1901. It is unclear whether the photograph was taken on the earlier or later date.

St Patrick’s Cathedral, 1885 - 1901

An exterior view of the cathedral, a fine product of the Gothic revival in Australia, situated on Eastern Hill facing down Gisborne Street, and designed in 1860 by William Wardell, who had earlier been a pupil of Pugin. The nave was in use by 1869, but the building was not consecrated as a cathedral until 1897.

Designed from London by William Butterfield, this squat Gothic building was completed by 1891, apart from the spires, which were added later. The spires are not present in this picture.
