The caption reads, 'On the right hand is the Convent Laarger [Laager] in which the foot volunteers were quartered. The centre camp was the head quarters of the Garrison under Colonel Gilde. On the left hand in the corner was the Civil Camp for the townspeople. The long brick buildings in the centre of the sketch were for ladies.'

D’Arcy since 1863 had acted in various clerical capacities in the Magistrate Department in Kingwilliamstown (1863-5), Peddie (1865-7) and Aliwal North (1867-7?) and was appointed Resident Magistrate at Kimberley in 1875 (see C.O.
