[Sir George Pomeroy Colley], 1880 - 1881
Scope and Contents
57 x 90 mm. A three-quarter length carte de visite portrait showing Major General Sir George Pomeroy Colley (1835-1881) standing beside a table, his hand resting on a pith helmet. Colley, who had seen extensive service in South Africa before being appointed Military (later Private) Secretary to Lord Lytton, Viceroy of India in 1876, was made Commander-in-Chief and Governor of Natal and High Commissioner for South-East Africa in 1880. He was killed during the defence of Amajuba Hill on 27 February 1881.
