A series of watercolours commissioned from the Rhodesian artist Mrs Gilbert Stephenson to be used in colouring lantern slides to illustrate the fifth handbook, A.J. Sargent, 'South Africa: seven lectures (London, 1914). Stephenson had been recommended by the British South Africa Company.

210 x 160 mm. The caption continues: 'First grade cloves. Note that all cloves have 'heads'. There are in fact the main parts of the flower bud (a mass of stamens enclosed in small bracts). If the clove bud opens before it is picked and dried then the clove will have lost its 'head' and the quality of the sample reduced.'
