210 x 160 mm. The caption continues: 'First grade cloves. Note that all cloves have 'heads'. There are in fact the main parts of the flower bud (a mass of stamens enclosed in small bracts). If the clove bud opens before it is picked and dried then the clove will have lost its 'head' and the quality of the sample reduced.'

In 1926 responsibility for technical training transferred from Makerere to the Kampala Training College and Makerere became a general training college. A commission of inquiry into education in East Africa recommended in 1937 that steps should be taken to transform Makerere into a college of higher education and in 1950 Makerere became a university...
