Two copies of a letter written from Port Phillip, 2 May 1836, discussing the foundation of the settlement at Melbourne in 1803 and its bright prospects. The collection comprises a manuscript copy (7 pages), which may be contemporary, and an undated typescript duplicate (4 pages). There are two accompanying pieces of correspondence, 1945-1946, regarding the gift of the manuscript copy to the R.C.S.

Copies of two manuscript deeds drawn up by J.T. Gellibrand, signed between John Batman and eight local chiefs on 6 June 1835. The deeds, the originals of which are in the Public Library of Victoria, granted Batman land covering the sites of Melbourne and Geelong, but were later held to be legally invalid. They have been mounted in plastic sleeves.

Melbourne Public Library, 1885 - 1901

200 x 147 mm. An interior view looking along a reading room lined with columns and busts, and with the bookshelves in alcoves. The library, situated in Swanston Street, was designed by Joseph Reed. The foundation stone was laid in 1853, and the first portion of the building was completed in 1856, when it was officially opened in that year.

207 x 149 mm. A view looking across a small ornamental lake towards two of the university buildings, the original building being on the right. One of the oldest Melbourne buildings, it was completed in the 1850s, with external walls of Victorian Bluestone, and faced with Hobart freestone.
