Scope and Contents
Comprises a typescript biography completed in 1936, and revised c. 1960 with the addition of supplementary inserts and photographs. 292 pp., with six portrait photographs inserted. The supplementary information, now housed in an accompanying file consists of: photograph of Gardiner memorial plaque at Hawthorn, with a descriptive note; list of ships passing between Van Dieman's Land [Tasmania] and the Port Phillip settlement in 1835-6 compiled by Wilmoth from the Launceston Advertiser; copy of letter from George F. Storey to Dr Pilkington, 13 Nov. 1835, on the alleged poisoning of Edward Eagle, brother of Mary Gardiner (5 pp.); copy of Mary Gardiner's account of a voyage from Sydney to Port Phillip in March 1837 (6 pp.); copy of original deed granting land in Morven, Van Dieman's Land [Evandale, Tasmania] to John Smith, 30 Jun. 1823.
John Gardiner (1798-1878) was a banker and pastoralist, an early settler in Van Dieman's Land [Tasmania], before settling near the junction of the Yarra River and Kooyongkoot Creek, later named Gardiner's Creek, in 1836 in what is now Melbourne. He returned to England in 1842 and died at Leamington Spa.

Biographical / Historical
Leslie James Wilmoth (1881-1963) was a geologist born in Melbourne. He later lived in London and was the director of Lomax, Erskine and Company, a publisher of technical journals. He was a member of the Royal Empire Society, serving on both the Library Committee and the Council in the 1950s, and donating two collections to the RCS archive, including the unpublished work, 'John Gardiner, pioneer and overlander' reflecting his interest in the early history of Victoria and Australia.
