'Melbourne' and 'Geelong' deeds, 1935
Scope and Contents
Copies of two manuscript deeds drawn up by J.T. Gellibrand, signed between John Batman and eight local chiefs on 6 June 1835. The deeds, the originals of which are in the Public Library of Victoria, granted Batman land covering the sites of Melbourne and Geelong, but were later held to be legally invalid. They have been mounted in plastic sleeves.

RCMS 278/34/1b, 2b and 3 were presented by the Public Library of Victoria, 1935. The provenance of the other items is unknown.
