Built in 1879-80 for the International Exhibition, it was the central landmark of the city for many years. Designed by Joseph Reed, the building cost £246,000 and contained 22 acres of floor space.

A view of the baroque building, with its dominating fan-shaped window above the entrance, which was built for the 1870 exhibition, celebrating Captain James Cook’s discovery of Botany Bay in 1770. The building was situated in the Prince Alfred Park behind the railway station and was demolished in 1954 in order to build a swimming pool.
