Contains Kodachromes, processed in England March 1963, arranged by processing number. The village mentioned on slides 21-31 appears to be Sabadrau, but this has not been found on any map of Fiji and has been represented by 'S' in most of the captions.

272 x 210 mm. View of a handsome row of six three storey terrace houses in Upper William Street, probably constructed in the 1840s. The verandahs, supported on cast-iron work run through both the ground and first floor and on the upper storey are supplied with curtains which can be drawn across for additional shade.
Urara Bridge, 1885
193 x 247 mm. A view of a section of the bridge from underneath, showing one of the outer supporting piers, composed of two joined iron cylinders, and set into the rock face at the edge of the gully. These lattice bridges started to appear on the railways in the early 1870's.

Ureparapara - George Nara’s school (outside the crater), 1892
205 x 151 mm. A view looking along the village street towards the school, in front of which a group of natives are standing. Ureparapara, the most northern of the Banks Islands, was also known as Blight Island and the Melanesian Mission ran two schools there, one situated inside, and one outside the crater of this extinct volcanic island.

U.S.S. ‘Trenton’, U.S.S. ‘Vandalia, German ship ‘Olga’, 1899 - 1900
A view showing the three wrecked ships in Apia harbour after the 1889 hurricane. The loss of these ships highlights the chaos of the storm; in the overcrowded harbour ships battered each other uncontrollably. 43 men died from the ‘Vandalia’, only one from ‘Trenton’.

195 x 135 mm. The building on the left, which Robert Louis Stevenson moved into in 1890, was the original Vailima. The building at the right, which eventually became larger than the first house, was added in 1893. The enclosed portion of the upstairs verandah was his workshop and library.
