They are uncaptioned but most have been identified from books on the Cape and on South African architecture; 25-31 are almost certainly photographs of Zulu peoples; the remainder are less clearly identified. Scope and Contents From the Fonds: The collection consists of a negatives album, produced by Lennon Ltd., Cape Town, containing 125 x 95 mm negatives and an envelope with six further negatives of the same size. Some are poor photographs but many that are apparently very faint contain a good deal of detail. Seven modern prints have also been made and are listed as Y305U/105-111. Scope and Contents 118 x 170 mm. A portrait of an African standing outside a grass hut. Despite the individuality of his clothes and hairstyle, his location and ethnic group have not been identified. The man's hair is shaved away from his temples and worn in a circular bun at the back of his head. He wears necklaces and toe rings and carries a paddle-shaped wooden club. The discovery of gold at Tarkwa during the 1890s provided the stimulus for the establishment of the Gold Coast Government Railway.
