Biographical / Historical
The creator of this album can be identified from a note on the inside cover, which reads ‘Ranika, another little souvenir to preserve her souvenirs, Hans.’ It is dated 23 February 1949 at Bangkok. Ranika is most likely Miss Veronica Maurice, the recipient of several postcards from Hans, addressed to her at Calcutta (Y302K/126). He is named in the album’s captions as Hans Le Mayeur, who appears in photographs accompanied by his wife Polok (Y302K/60-61).
The album preserves original photographs and postcards recording travels by Maurice through Southeast Asia, some of the Pacific Islands, Australia, the United States and Africa, probably during 1949 and the early 1950s. The latter section of the album also includes postcards from Le Mayeur. It is possible that some of these photographs were also sent by him. Some of the photographs have been captioned on the album pages. The captions have been used as titles and may include language which is offensive, inaccurate or inappropriate. They have been retained to reflect the context of the collection's creation. Captions supplied by the cataloguer are enclosed in square brackets.
