Although Hughes agreed to write a piece, he was not able to produce something in time for the publication deadline. Also includes photocopies of the letters and a blank postcard featuring a photograph of Ted Hughes taken by Henri Cartier-Bresson/Magnum Photos in 1971.

It is not clear whether the 'gift' was 9 black and white photographs of Kaihoji Temple, Nara Folk Museum showing Joseph Needham, Lu Gwei-Djen, Keizo Hashimoto, Machiko Hashimoto 橋本真知子and Kiyoshi Yabuuchi (Yabuuchi Kiyoshi 薮内清) taken in Apr. 1978. The photographs were found with the letter but have been placed with other photographs of the Japanese visit 1978 (NRI2/10/1/64).

The letter sent to John Moffett (Needham Research Institute) encloses copies of reports by Wang Wau-Sheng [Wang Wansheng] and Sun Kuang-Chun [Sun Guangjun] who were the first scholars to visit the UK through British United Aid to China (which became the Sino-British Fellowship Trust). The visits were from 1947 to 1949. These are the Bailie School boys in the Wartime photos at Dunhuang, etc. The file also includes a copy of a report by V. Elizabeth Moore.
