Early correspondence of partners, 1856-1900
Two identical sets of undated typescript extracts from miscellaneous correspondence of partners of Jardine, Matheson & Co., November 1837-September 1856. Most of the letters are from Great Britain to Canton or Hong Kong, and were exchanged between David Jardine, Joseph Jardine, William Jardine, Andrew Johnstone, Alexander Matheson, James Matheson and Donald Matheson, but there are also letters from C.B. Skinner, Calcutta; Donald Matheson, Singapore; and James Hope Stewart, Gillenbie.

The majority of the extracts are from letters or letter books, but there also a few extracts from memoranda, note books and other documents. Copies (mostly press copies) of letters from correspondents in China and Japan, and occasionally other places, to R.A. Houstoun, F.B. Johnson, William Keswick, Donald Matheson, Edward Whittall and James Whittall. Most of the letters were sent to Shanghai, but there are also some to Hong Kong. The principal recipients are F.B. Johnson and Edward Whittall.
