Scope and Contents

Copies (mostly press copies) of letters from correspondents in China and Japan, and occasionally other places, to R.A. Houstoun, F.B. Johnson, William Keswick, Donald Matheson, Edward Whittall and James Whittall. Most of the letters were sent to Shanghai, but there are also some to Hong Kong. The principal recipients are F.B. Johnson and Edward Whittall.

Access to the collection is subject to special conditions and is at the discretion of Matheson and Co. Ltd, part of the Jardine Matheson Group. Access is generally available to documents dated up to 1969. Access to some earlier records may be restricted under the terms of the Data Protection Act, 1998.

Many of the letters were found loose in the boxes that constituted D1/37. These were supplemented by letters from D1/8/7, which contained the same type of material, and letters from other series.
