Government House, S.E. [i.e. South-East] Entrance, Grenada, 1890 - 1893

Scope and Contents 318 x 216 mm. A view looking across the garden and drive towards Government House, in front of which stands a landau with a uniformed driver. This new, brick built Government House was commenced while the previous Governor, Sir Walter Sendall, was away from the island in 1886, the year after Grenada became the headquarters for the Windward Islands administration. The figure standing on the steps leading up to the house is probably Sir Walter Hely-Hutchinson.

Standing in the drive in the foreground is the Governor of the Windward Islands, Sir Walter Hely-Hutchinson (1849-1913), who assumed the post from November 1889 until 1893. He later spent nine years as Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Cape Colony.

Scope and Contents An album containing prints with handwritten captions, breaking down into geographical locations:1-18, 21, 34: general views in Jamaica, in good condition, mainly measuring approximately 215 x 135 mm, commercial work. The first prints show scenes at the Jamaica Exhibition of 1891 and the other photographs may have been purchased at this time: they were certainly taken, however, in the 1880s, since several are duplicates of material in Y307A, an album compiled in that decade. ...
