Government House, Montserrat, 1913 - 1914

 Item
Reference Code: GBR/0115/RCS/Y3011E/57

Scope and Contents

118 x 88 mm. A view showing the driveway and gabled front façade of Government House: 'The new Government House is quite a delightful place with one of the most beautiful gardens I have ever seen. I call it the 'Garden of lovely tones' for the shadows under the big trees are full of the softest violets and greens and rose. I wish I had it in Antigua. [Davidson-]Houston was rather a pet of my predecessor who allowed him almost carte blanche when building this house. The result is that it has already cost over £4000 and is not yet finished. The place is out of all proportion to the little Colony and the local complaints are loud ...' (Bell 1913, July 15).
