203 x 157 mm. The caption on the reverse reads 'tribal capital of the Bamangwato. It is one of the four villages in the Protectorate with a population of more than 10,000. This photograph was taken from the Khama Memorial above Serowe'. A more lengthy caption summarises the physical and human geography of the Bechuanaland Protectorate.

Showing a group of pioneer officers posed in front of the wagon behind which a flag (probably the BSA Co. flag, a Union flag in the centre of which stands a lion guardant passant holding a tusk of ivory) flies on a pole. The figures are too indistinct for positive identification, but Heany, Pennefather, Johnson and Selous can be made out. Photograph probably taken at Macloutsie camp, June 1890.

65 x 41 mm. Showing a group of Damara refugees (see introduction) walking through grassland. Reproduced in Hodson facing p 93 where the location is identified as Otse. Hodson found about 250 refugees at Otse, many of whom were suffering from smallpox and on the verge of starvation. After destroying their arms and giving strict instructions that the group should isolate themselves, Hodson arranged for their transfer to Kgentsa.
