Scope and Contents

From the Fonds:

Collection of negatives, contact prints and enlargements. Mann travelled from London, which he left on 20 June 1935, via Egypt to the Sudan, Kenya, Uganda, Belgian Congo, French Equatorial Africa and the Cameroons to South Africa, arriving in Johannesburg on 31 October.

1-516 are enlargements of Mann's photographs and 517-575 are photographic postcards, chiefly of the Sudan. In addition there is a box containing the original negatives 45 x 45 mm with contact prints, but these have not been compared with the enlargements and are not listed. Mr Mann comments that the photographs of special interest are those of the Dinka dance in the Sudan, rarely performed even in 1935 (73-99) and the Pigmy dance at Lolwa in the Belgian Congo (397-402).
