Mann travelled from London, which he left on 20 June 1935, via Egypt to the Sudan, Kenya, Uganda, Belgian Congo, French Equatorial Africa and the Cameroons to South Africa, arriving in Johannesburg on 31 October. 1-516 are enlargements of Mann's photographs and 517-575 are photographic postcards, chiefly of the Sudan. At the village of Mochudi in the Bakgatla Reserve, 1960-07

204 x 156 mm. Showing a procession of women, led by a chanting man. The caption on the reverse reads 'The procession is announcing a wedding to the 'Kgotla', or general meeting, of the Tribe. A 'Kgotla' is arranged whenever the Chief wants to talk to adult males and (on occasion) to women and children. The Bakgatla tribe is widespread, mostly in the Transvaal'. A more lengthy caption summarises the physical and human geography of the Bechuanaland Protectorate.

65 x 41 mm. Showing a child holding a small bow and arrow, with a grass hut in the background. Reproduced in Hodson facing p 24, where the location is identified as Kakea Pan. The term Bushmen was used to describe a group of Khoisan-speaking hunter-gatherers who lived in the Kalahari Desert.
