40 x 65 mm. (Vignetted oval). A carte de visite half length studio portrait of the bearded Captain Van der Ven. Wilhelmus J. Van der Ven is listed as living at Sea Point in The Cape of Good Hope Directory and Almanac for 1868. By 1879 he is listed as a wine merchant residing at Arnheim House, Buitencingel. In the 1880 edition, he is listed as being in Europe and does not appear in the 1882 edition.

Scope and Contents Two photographs by James Edward Bruton. Bruton (also known as Brunton) was born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. His parents had settled in South Africa in 1820. He first opened a photographic studio in 1858, opposite the Lyceum in Port Elizabeth. In 1859 he moved to Jetty Street, Port Elizabeth, working as a photographer and tobacconist. Bruton married Mary Ann Woodman and eventually had five children. In 1874 he moved to Cape Town. Between 1876 and 1897 he appears to have been located at...

The majority of these were taken in the north of the province; at Magoebaskoof (two visits); Tzaneen (including a sequence showing sisal growing and processing); Vendaland in the extreme north and a few coming south to Orhigstad and Graskop. A group taken at Mala Mala camp is assumed to be in the Transvaal, though the precise location has not been found. The section concludes with a visit to a fishing lodge at Dulstroom in December 1969.

300 x 105 mm. A view showing the section of Caxton Street which adjoins the market square. Identified among the ruins are the Union Castle Co. offices and the Grand Hotel. A note states 'Sparks and blazing material carried from lower end of square by force of gale, these set a stack of forage alight near the corner and soon adjoining buildings were in a blaze, the fire gradually extending to the whole block.'
