Photographs, 1880 - 1900
Scope and Contents
A series of mostly uncaptioned photographs largely relating to Sitwell's service in Toro, Uganda, between 1895 and 1898. Brief captions have been supplied. Further light could be shed upon the photographs by detailed reference to Sitwell’s diary. They include views of Fort Gerry, where Sitwell was based, his company of Sudanese infantry and other soldiers, roads that the troops had constructed, as well as images of his travels in the region. A few depict the Ruwenzori Mountains and the surrounding region. In July 1898, Sitwell became one of the first Europeans to ascend to the snows of the mountains. A few photographs date from the Second Boer War. Two notes from members of Sitwell's family and a letter to him from an unidentified correspondent, which came with RCMS 172/3/37-44, are filed with the collection.
