278 x 228 mm. Showing vast stalactite and stalagmite formations in the Throne Room. The Cango Caves are situated about nineteen miles west of Oudtshoorn near the foot of the Zwartberg Pass. This spectacular cave system was discovered in 1780 by a Dutch farmer named van Zijl and contains paintings near the entrance.

Contains slides including a group of seven interiors of Marnham's house taken in August 1968, three showing servants in February 1968 and one of the visit of the Mayor for the celebration of the Queen's birthday on 20 April 1968. The majority show the garden, from scenes in April 1967 to seven transparencies making up a panorama taken on the eve of departure in March 1970. In between these are extensive views both of individual clumps of flowers and more general scenes.

Scope and Contents From the Fonds: The collection consists of a negatives album, produced by Lennon Ltd., Cape Town, containing 125 x 95 mm negatives and an envelope with six further negatives of the same size. Some are poor photographs but many that are apparently very faint contain a good deal of detail. Seven modern prints have also been made and are listed as Y305U/105-111. The images were taken by Albert Ernest Lamb and the captions are from the list in the front of the album. The captions have been used as titles...

Scope and Contents 210 x 142 mm. Showing the offices of the Cape Argus at the junction of Darling and Adderley Streets on the NW corner of the Parade. A ghost image of a ponytrap which has moved during the exposure can be seen in the foreground. The plateau of Table Mountain dominates the skyline beyond the building. Founded in January 1857, the paper was re-named The Argus in 1869. The date of the picture is supplied by the placards outside the building which read 'Delhi has fallen' and 'A full report of...

Cape homesteads. Fransch Hoek [Franschhoek], Burgundy 1791, 1925

203 x 151 mm. Showing the homestead 'Burgundy' built on land settled by Pierre de Villiers in 1694. The main gable, dated 1791 and one of the oldest in the area, is the only surviving one from a fire which also destroyed the thatch; the building as seen has a corrugated iron roof but it is unclear whether this photograph was taken before or after the fire.

With a group of African labourers seated on the road in the foreground. 'The present house has two good gables of the early neo-classical type, the east one dated 1800. The end gables are exceptionally finished, with the apex split into two scrolls: they are reminiscent of the outstnding end-gables of Bien Donne. Showing the front facade of the house in Tokai built by Andreas Rauch in the 1790's: 'This is the usual peninsula u-shaped house, but with an added bar, with gabled ends ... The steeply-sloping ground calls for an exceptionally high stoep, unique in being reached not centrally, but at the two ends by twin flights of steps, gracefully curved ... The forecourt is marked by symmetrically-placed outbuildings on two sides, and a line of pillars on the third: the two central pillars...
