Albany is situated about 250 miles by road S.E. of Perth and lies on the site of the first settlement in Western Australia. Its fine harbour (not visible in picture) was, before Fremantle harbour was constructed, the most important port of the west coast.

Aldgate lies between Crafters and Bridgwater in the Mount Lofty Ranges and the section of the railway to Aldgate was opened in March 1883, the last 21 miles of the line costing £20, 500 per mile to construct.

The hospital, the second in Melbourne, was built as a thanksgiving to commemorate the Duke of Edinburgh’s survival of the attempted assassination in Sydney in 1868. Prince Alfred laid the foundation stone in 1869, and the building was opened in 1871.
