Scope and Contents From the File: Contains prints the majority of which are circa 290 x 215 mm., but 4-6, 9-18, 20-27, 51-55, 91-94, and 96-98 are approximately 140 x 100 mm. Nos. 4-27, 51 are scenes of the Royal Visit in November 1905, 19-26 being triumphal arches. The other subjects are the Maharajah and his family (1-3), Lallgarh Palace (28-50), Gujner (52-64), the Old Palace (65-82, 85), Bikaner City (83-84, 891-98 and Bikaner forces (89-90). 246 x 198 mm. View looking north over the rooftops of Bombay from the tower of St Thomas’ Cathedral. In the centre of the print, running north, is Bazar Gate Street, with the NE corner of the Maidan visible at the top left of the photograph. This print forms the central portion of a six part panorama of the city from the cathedral extending 180°. Y3022A/12, 13, 8, 10, 11, 9 provide a continuous view from west to east.

The Town Hall is in the centre of the print and facing the Cathedral across the Green. Designed by Colonel Thomas Cowper of the Bombay Engineers and financed partly by subscription and partly by government funding it was built between 1820 and 1833. Behind the Town Hall parts of Bombay Castle are to be seen while to the left is the Mint, designed by Major John Hawkins of the Bombay...

Scope and Contents From the Fonds: Archives created by the British soldier and diplomat Henry Burney relating to his service in Burma [Myanmar] and Siam [Thailand]. The cataloguing of the collection has occurred in several stages. In 1921, the RCI Librarian Evans Lewin listed the main English language material in four series, assigning each a letter, A to D. In 1958, Dr D.K. Wyatt examined the Siamese material, including some as yet uncatalogued European material. He listed it in three sections, with the letters E, F, and...

Fourteen undated sketches depicting views of the University of Hong Kong, many of which have since disappeared under high-rise developments. Twelve of the sketches are incorporated into Christmas cards from F.S. and D.M. Drake. The sketches are presumably from Drake's time as Professor of Chinese. There is an accompanying letter from Bernard Drake to T.A. Barringer, R.C.S. Librarian, 7 December 1996.
