West Redoubt, 1885

Scope and Contents

197 x 150 mm. A view showing a sandbag fortification similar to Y3042A/9 but with a taller wooden lookout platform. A group of soldiers stands on and in front of the redoubt. Two cannons are in position facing out towards the desert and the whole emplacement is protected by a seriba of thorny mimosa.

291 x 241 mm. A view looking along the valley towards the steep-sided Majuba Hill, scene of the British defeat on February 27 1881 and the death of General Colley, the commander. The Boers made their first assault from the steep western slope. The print is signed 'E. Caney Maritzburg' and has the caption: 'West side of Majuba Hill', and is also numbered 'No. 17.'
