Photograph album, 1928-06 - 1928-11
Album of mostly 80 x 54 mm prints. There is a brief list describing items 1-98, which document the trip from Southampton to South Africa, travel in South Africa, and the visit to Southern Rhodesia. Many photos do not appear in the exact numerical order given in the listing. The rest of the images are uncaptioned, but their general locations have been identified by reference to the diary RCMS 353/1.

A photograph of a watercolour depicting a Roman Catholic cathedral in Cape Town. The size of the copy, 14" x 9¾", is identical to the original painting, which was presented to the Society by Miss M. Pigot Moodie in 1939, and sold through C.J. Sawyer in December 1975. Pencilled at the bottom of the picture is 'Roman Catholic Cathedral' and 'Bowler 1888'. Frank R. Bradlow, a writer on Bowler, considered the painting to be an authentic Bowler, and that the date was a later addition.

There is typescript note identifying the individuals in the photograph.

90 x 130 mm. Dr James Aggrey was born in West Africa in 1875 and studied in the United States. He was a member of two commissions of enquiry into African education in 1920 and 1923, and was appointed Assistant Vice Principal when Achimota College was founded. He died in 1927.

The typewritten caption on the reverse reads 'Educated at University College, Oxford, he was in England throughout the blitz. At Oxford he took Modern Greats, i.e. Philosophy, politics and economics. Hereturned to the Gold Coast to do research work in Sociology, but was offered and accepted the post of Assistant District Commissioner'.

In the centre of the display can be seen ‘Professor Uhlig’s fine photographic enlargements, perhaps the most noteworthy of which being those representing the summit and glaciers of Kibo, Kilimanjaro, taken by means of a telescopic lense from a neighbouring height, and some exquisite forest scenery’ (‘Zanzibar Gazette’ August 23rd 1905).

Photographs and postcards of the 1913 and 1922 strikes, 1913 - 1970
Items 1-4 deal with the 1913 strike. Items 5-12 document significant sites associated with the 1922 strike, pointed out by a Mr van Tonder, who has yet to be identified. It is likely that he is either E. van Tonder or H.J. van Tonder who appear in the Trade Union Council of South Africa records.
