Photographic record of prospecting tour in Abakaliki, Ogoja and Idoma divisions [Nigeria] dealing with customs and general life, 1947-09 - 1948-05
Scope and Contents
Photographs of masks, dress, dances, musical instruments and prospecting work, accompanied by descriptive captions and notes (82 x 57 mm). Benson introduces the album by writing, 'The photographs and notes which follow were collected during a prospecting trip covering 700 miles mainly in the north of Abakaliki Division, part of the west of Ogoja Division and along the Ogoja-Idoma boundary. The notes etc. refer to the natives, who have not come under the European or outside influence. The notes are by no means exhaustive and include only what was actually seen and information as to customs collected from fairly reliable sources.' Benson's letters from this period may be found at RCMS 364/1/5.
