Each cicatrix is a round dome, smooth and of regular size. A piece of bamboo is inserted into the nostrils. They used to practice cannibalism by setting traps of thin dust covered brushwood placed over pits or a chair set on the thinly covered pit in front of the house where the unwary traveller sat and fell in only to be set...

A glimpse of Barberton, De Kaap Gold Fields, 1900 - 1910

204 x 151 mm. A view from surrounding hillside looking down on the town of Barberton in the eastern Transvaal. Founded in 1884, Barberton was the centre of the De Kaap Goldfields which up to about 1887 produced several million pounds worth of gold. After that date gold mining activity fell off.

A translation by Trevor Jaggar from the Kiswahili of the 1990 reprint of Kareithi's novel, with a translator's note and preface, 54 pages. In his note Jaggar explains that his purpose in translating Karethi's work was 'to enable British and other readers of English to learn something of what the Mau Mau War felt like to a Kikuyu striving for the independence of Kenya from British colonial rule'.
