Letter to Master or bursar with questions from the Bishop of Lincoln relating to the extended rent of Alford, etc., with a view to setting a fine for renewal., 1791-03-04
The rectory of Alford was bequeathed to the college by John Green, Master 1750-64, Bishop of Lincoln 1761-78, for the purpose of purchasing annually three pieces of plate for presentation to undergraduates who distinguished themselves academically; he also gave £100 for the renewal of the lease (see, in more detail, Lamb's edition of Masters' History of the College at p. 247. and no. 2, below).

Discusses sum due from the college to John Waller as Vicar of Grantchester; correspondence with Thomas Gooch, VC; the appellant fellows' dependence on a charter (presumably University Archives: Luard 196) authorising the VC and two senior resident DDs to act as visitors to colleges which have no statutory provision for other visitors); requests Mawson to get a sight of the charter; transcribes Gooch's letter to him (transcription torn off and is now 03/4/7f.i).

He is sending the petition for signature with instructions that it then be immediately taken by special messenger to Monks Eleigh for the signature of Christopher Fawcett [whose brother, Thomas, had been presented to the living there in 1717 but died before leaving the college] and then brought back to Bradford in London.

Sent with a King's messenger bringing an order from the King in Council for a stay to proceedings in the case in the university. He recommends sending a notary public or other reliable person to witness its delivery to the VC.

'As to the other news you write me, I can tell you nothing positively; but only, That whosoever may be Bp of Carlile, no alteration is like to be in the mastership of Corp. Xti.' [Bradford was nominated to the see of Carlisle on 21 April 1718, translated to Rochester on 19 July 1723 in which year he was also appointed Dean of Westminster. He resigned the Mastership in 1724.

Gooch has sent to Cambridge a copy of Act of Parliament so that Samuel Gatward might be instructed to draw up a conveyance of the houses in Regent Walk from the college to the university. He hopes that the conveyance will be ready to be sealed as soon as the Act receives the royal assent, so that he can pay the money to the trustees before leaving London.

Sir Nicholas Bacon had founded a grammar school at Redgrave, Suffolk, and settled on the college an annuity of £20 issuing out of his manors of Studdye and Burningham in Norfolk to support six scholars from the school.
The estates from which the annuity was payable had since been purchased by the Britiffe family..

At the foot, notes on the chapter meeting of Thursday, 5 October, at which the discharging of the old cooks and election of the new was over-ruled on the grounds that it had been done without the consent of the Master. On the dorse, notes relating to the quarrels between the Master and some of the Fellows (for which see Masters, pp. 133-34).

The rectory, with the perpetual advowson of the vicarage, was presented to the college in 1594 by Roger Manners of Uffington, third son of Thomas Earl of Rutland and one of the Esquires of the Body to the Queen, for the maintenance of four poor scholars.
