Papers relating to a dispute within the college regarding pre-elections to fellowships., 1718
Scope and Contents
For an account of this dispute see Lamb/Masters, pp. 220 to 223. In brief: certain fellows disputed the legitimacy of pre-electing to Fellowships and appealed to the VC and the two senior DDs in the university as visitors. The Master (Bradford) and remaining fellows denied that the VC and DDs had cognizance and the matter went to the King in Council, who found, in the end, that pre-elections were legitimate, but should in future only be made to vacancies arising at a predetermined time, and that the VC and DDs were not visitors in this case.
