Papers relating to a dispute between the college and Thomas Allen, vicar of Grantchester., 1540 - 1545
Scope and Contents
Allen was B.A. from Pembroke, 1520/1; Fellow there, 1521; Fellow of Corpus 1536; Vicar of Grantchester 1540-45; died. 1545.
Most items are undated and no attempt has been made to present them in chronological order.
Allen's patron (see items h to k) is not named, but in the draft of his letter to him (k) Aleyn deletes your 'mastership' and substitutes 'lordship'; further, when Allen refers to his patron's solicitations on his behalf the master is reported as saying 'that Master Secretare dothe send many letteres yn a yere, And regardeth as moche the treyp of a manse fynger as the spedying or performyng of his letteres'. This might suggest one of the Secretaries of State appointed in 1540: either Thoms Wriothesley, elected knight of the shire for Hampshire in 1539, or, more probably Ralph Sadler, protonotary of chancery from 1537, knighted in April 1540, but that Allen was elected a Fellow of the college in 1536, and Secretaries of State were not appointed until 1540.
