By the end of 1912 Antigua had suffered from three successive years of drought which culminated in an almost total failure of supply in St. John's, although the situation was saved by heavy showers in October and November. Much work was done during 1912 to improve matters: the damming of Bendal's Stream, the clearing of springs, the digging of wells and the building of a dam across the Body Ponds...

In the harbour at the right can be seen Rat Island, connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway and at this period housing a signal station and an asylum for people affected by leprosy. In the foreground of the photograph stands a lighthouse, with a water reservoir beyond and the twin towers of the Cathedral visible on the skyline.

Bell's description of the Princess' visit, and his assessment of her character, can be found in a letter in which he mentions the success of the decorations: 'The decorations etc were really extraordinarily good and the local photographer [Jose Anjo] has taken a lot of excellent pictures of them.' (Bell 1913, April 6).

The building replaces the earlier church which was destroyed by an earthquake in 1843. The corner stone of the later building was laid in 1845 and the cathedral opened for worship in 1847 although not completed until the following year.

A Christmas card from Barclays Bank (Dominion, Colonial and Overseas), 1952, depicting a view of English Harbour (now called Saint Johns), Antigua, from Great George Fort on Monk's Hill in 1830. There is an accompanying undated photograph of the same scene and a short note describing the card.

Scope and Contents This is a collection of 12 halftone prints and two sheets of paper, which both have handwritten inscriptions in ink. The photographer was W.M.H. Ward & Co. Although there are 14 captions listed on one of the accompanying sheets of paper, only 12 prints are present. Images corresponding to captions 1, 3, and 7 are absent.
