Much work was done during 1912 to improve matters: the damming of Bendal's Stream, the clearing of springs, the digging of wells and the building of a dam across the Body Ponds...

The building replaces the earlier church which was destroyed by an earthquake in 1843. The corner stone of the later building was laid in 1845 and the cathedral opened for worship in 1847 although not completed until the following year.
