Scope and Contents Notes from rough diaries Bell kept during his service in the Gold Coast between 1890-94 (initially as Supervisor of Customs), in the Bahamas as Receiver General and Treasurer, and then from 1899 as Acting Governor of the Leeward Islands and Administrator of Dominica. These notes cover Bell’s service as Administrator of Dominica and Acting Governor of the Leeward Islands (1899-1905), Commissioner (Governor) of Uganda (1906-1909), Governor of Northern Nigeria (1909-12), Governor of the Leeward Islands (1912-1916) and Governor of Mauritius (1916-24). Prominent subjects include Bell’s official duties, colleagues, travels, social life and personal affairs (circa 180 sheets).

A scrapbook album containing prints by various photographers, including Alfred Lobo. The prints are of various sizes and the majority are captioned in Bell's hand. Captions composed for this catalogue are enclosed in square brackets. Among the scenes and events depicted in the album are the Kampala Exhibition of 1908, views of Government House, Entebbe, the visit of Winston Churchill to Uganda in 1907, sleeping sickness sufferers in Uganda and durbars in Northern Nigeria.
