British Consulate, Lourenço Marques, 1899 - 1908
205 x 156 mm. Showing the two storey square building, a smallish compact house with verandahs on both floors. The garden, in which the Union Jack flies from a flagpole, is surrounded by metal fencing. The consulate was situated in the centre of Lourenço Marques, at the heart of the commercial district. Cathedral, Lourenço Marques, 1902 - 1908
207 x 153 mm. Showing the newly built cathedral with part of the harbour visible in the background. There are signs that this photograph was taken before the completion of the building: the clock is as yet without hands and statues have not yet been placed in the niches beside the door. Presumably it is Nossa Santiora da Conceicao situated in the Praça Serpa Pinto. Proposals for a new cathedral were made in 1902, but it is not certain when it was completed. Signed ‘J. Customs Enclosure, Lourenço Marques, 1899 - 1908
204 x 155 mm. Showing the road leading into the Enclosure with a new-looking single storey crenulated building at the right. Whether this is the Customs House is unclear. A new building was proposed as early as 1904 but for several years the department was housed in rental accommodation while the new premises was built on the site of the old Railway Station. They were not occupied until 1911 by which time the Lazarus Brothers had left Lourenço Marques. Signed ‘J & M Lazarus, Photos’.
