204 x 153 mm. Showing a group of unidentified military figures on horseback at the Grand Review to celebrate the King of Portugal’s birthday. The occupation of the Boer base at Komatie Poort, situated 55 miles northwest of Lourenço Marques, at the end of Sept. 1900, marked the end of organised Boer resistance during the South African War. Scope and Contents Collection of five albums of family photographs, made up almost entirely of amateur snapshots between 80 x 60 mm. and 110 x 150 mm., and many of which are of purely personal interest. However, taken as a whole, they comprise a record of aspects of life in Rhodesia and elsewhere in Africa of interest to the social historian. The albums are carefully annotated by Zöe Ellison towards the end of her life (she died in Cambridge on 4 August 1986, only a fortnight after her last letter to the RCS...

View looking along the unsurfaced street lined with small single storey houses which ran parallel to the harbour frontage between the Praça Azeredo Gardens and the Praça Mousinho D’Albuquerque. A note on the mount reads ‘as it was in 1895 now entirely different with large buildings erected'. The absence of any signature on the print makes it possible that the photograph was indeed taken around this time before the Lazarus Brothers had set up their business. The only two...
