An accompanying note reads ‘Mpwapwa was first tentatively occupied by Shergeld Smith & his party of missionaries, including Alexander Makay on their way to Uganda for the first time in 1876. Scope and Contents A set of ivory travelling cutlery from Tanganyika designed during the early 1920s. It belonged to Dr James Van Derwent, a Colonial Medical Officer, who served at Songea. It comprises a mustard pot, egg cup, salt cellar, fork, spoon and small knife, as well as a lady’s card case, pen-holder and comb. The case contains a printed calling card, on which is hand-written ‘Am ready when you are free’, on one side and printed ‘Dr Jas. Van Derwent, Col[onial] Medical Service, Tanganyika Territory’ on...

Seyyid Ali bin Said, the last of the sons of Seyyid Said to sit on the Zanzibar throne, was Sultan from 1890-1893. The British Pretectorate over Zanzibar and Pemba was declared at the beginning of his reign.
